Pima / Santa Cruz Tech Prep is a credit-based, college transition program, like AP, for students in occupational areas.

Who runs it?

Tech Prep is a nationwide program that is administered in our state through the Arizona Department of Education. The Tech Prep State Director is Dennis Fiscus. He oversees eleven Tech Prep Consortia.

The Pima / Santa Cruz Tech Prep Consortium consists of representatives from each participating school district, area higher ed institutions, the local business community and the fiscal agency (Pima County School Superintendent). The Pima / Santa Cruz Tech Prep Director, Dr. Mary Jondrow, works with an Executive Board and Leadership Council to establish goals, objectives and key activities. Dr. Jondrow then collaborates with her staff, site coordinators at each high school and Pima Community College faculty facilitators to meet those goals and objectives.

Who funds it?

The Pima / Santa Cruz Tech Prep Consortium is funded by the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act. The U.S. Department of Education awards money to each state according to a formula based on the states’ populations in certain age groups and their per capita income. Local agencies and postsecondary institutions then apply to their State Board for Vocational Education for funding.

What is the articulation process?

    • CTE teacher identifies 100-level PCC course(s) equivalent to Level III high school offerings.
    • CTE teacher submits an Articulation Proposal for each potential articulation to Tech Prep in early spring.
    • Tech Prep personnel conduct meetings with PCC faculty and CTE teachers to discuss potential articulations.
    • PCC faculty members review each Articulation Proposal and respond through Tech Prep.
    • Tech Prep personnel initiate Memorandums of Understanding for each articulated course before the end of the school year.
